What are Braille Exit Signs?

Braille exit signs are specialized emergency exit signs that provide tactile information for visually impaired individuals during an emergency situation. These signs feature raised, tactile letters and symbols in addition to traditional visual markings, enabling visually impaired individuals to locate emergency exits and safely evacuate a building in the event of a fire or other emergency.

What are the Requirements for Braille Exit Signs?

The requirements for braille exit signs are governed by various regulations and standards, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the International Building Code (IBC), and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). These guidelines specify that braille exit signs should be located in the same position and at the same height as visual signs, and should include raised letters and symbols with a minimum height of 5/8 inch (16 mm). The signs must also be positioned so that they are easily detectable by touch and must be placed adjacent to the door handle or push bar.
