Fire Marshal's Checklist - What They Look For
Emergency Lighting
Illuminate exit paths during a power failure. (Batteries, Lamps, Connectors, Free of damage, operate 90 minutes or more)
Monthly testing/documentation are required and maintained by the property owner/tenant.
Exit Signs
Exit signs are be illuminated at all times, including during power failures. (batteries, lamps, arrows, clean, free of damage, operate 90 minutes or more)
Monthly testing/documentation are required, up to date, and maintained by the property owner/tenant.
Exits
All exits, including exit corridors and aisles, are clear of obstructions at all times
All exit doors remain unlocked while the building is occupied
All exit doors are free of deadbolts, slide bolts, and padlocks.
Fire Extinguishers
Fire extinguishers are readily visible and mounted in an accessible location.
Monthly inspection and annual service are required along with ability to present documentation.
Fire Alarm Systems
All fire alarm systems are regularly inspected and tested annually per NFPA 72
Records are available for review.
Automatic Sprinklers
All sprinkler systems are inspected and tested annually per NFPA 25 requirements.
Records are available for review.
18” clearance is maintained around all sprinkler heads
Extension Cords
Extension cords are not used as a substitutes for permanent wiring.
They shall not be run through walls, ceilings or attached to building surfaces.
Electrical Panels
36” clearance is maintained to provide access.
All circuits are labeled
Missing and unused circuits are covered with a blank cover
Food and Cooking Establishments
Must have documentation of semi-annual hood and duct cleaning per NFPA 96.
Must have documentation that fire suppression system has been tested and serviced in accordance with NFPA 17 & 17A.
